Product Description

An important yet entertaining look at the value of building strong relationships, written by the hugely successful star of HGTV's Fixer Upper and the new Magnolia network.

Only a few people-Oprah, Ted Turner, Walt Disney, and now Chip and Joanna Gaines-have literal networks. But every successful person has a network of people-friends, family, and business associates-who serve as a support system. This "community" shapes a person's identity, behavior, and values, which ideally include kindness and being considerate of others and their needs.

"Nice people finish first," says Chip Gaines, the wildly popular and admired star of HGTV's Fixer Upper and cofounder of the Magnolia brand. "And networking always works better than bridge burning." With these truths as the foundational cornerstone, Chip uses his own unique journey as a creative and entrepreneur to construct a case for the value and importance of developing strong relationships at work and outside of work. He says, "If you live your life the right way, with the right values and the right priorities, you will end up in the right relationships." Those relationships then become the currency for success.

Part business book and all manifesto for living a fulfilled life, Building a Network unpacks the beauty and purpose of embracing kindness and connection with those around you.

About the Author

Chip Gaines

Chip Gaines

Chip Gaines is co-owner and co-founder of Magnolia Homes, and co-stars in HGTV's Fixer Upper with his wife Joanna. Chip was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised in Dallas. He graduated from Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business with a Marketing degree.

An entrepreneur by nature, Chip has started more successful small businesses than you could count on both hands, including Green and Gold Wash and Fold, a local Waco laundry service geared toward college students, a fireworks stand and multiple landscaping companies.

If you've thought about it, Chip's probably tried it. Having grown up spending time on his granddad's ranch in North Texas, Chip became a true cowboy at heart. He was made for hard labor and always preferred digging ditches to academic pursuits. Chip manages the construction and realty side of Magnolia. He has 15 years of experience in the field and has remodeled hundreds of homes in the Waco-area. His design preference is "whatever Joanna likes," and he always comes up with a "creative solution" that saves the day and helps Joanna make the impossible possible. To say he adds comic relief to the team would be an understatement; he keeps us rolling, but also on our toes.

Chip loves life with his four kiddos and is head over heels for Joanna. Hand in hand is exactly how Chip prefers to work, which makes Fixer Upper even more fun to watch, and he enjoys seeing his and Joanna's passions merge to compliment and serve each other.
